The basic idea is to encourage members to support their favorite African Violet Vendor by purchasing a few plants this spring. In the current economy African Violet Vendors are struggling even more to run their businesses. We wouldn't have our lovely African Violet Hobby without the contributions of top class vendors through the years such as the Tinari's, Lyndon Lyon Greenhouse, The Violet Barn, Travis' Violets and many others.
The idea for the project is for members to purchase a few violets from vendors. There will be 5 categories to enter the project.
1 - Standard
2 - Semi-miniature
3 - Trailer
4 - Micro-miniature
5 - Species/Vintage
There will be a group photo album for each category. Members will post a photo of up to 3 varieties in each category when they get their new plants. Members will can repost photos of each plant at most once a month and at least once every three months.
Most vendors start shipping in May. The project will start in April. Members can post photos of their new plants in April 1 - June 15. Photos of the project plants will be posted through the next year. Photo entries will end June 15, 2010.
After June 15, 2010, members can vote for the best two plants end each category.
There will also be a discussion topic for members to discuss the progress with their project plants throughout the year.
I will put up a poll to see who is interested in joining the project. I'd like to get at least 6 people to join in. A dozen or more would be even better.
Plants can be purchased either from a vendor through mail, from their shop or at a show. Plants should have been purchased after March 1, 2009. Plants should be starter type plants, ie in a 2 inch pot or less for a standard. For semi's and mini's, ask the vendor to send young plants.
Any other ideas?
If you have other suggestions for how to run the contest, please post and vote in the poll.
